Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz has reported another interception of a Russian reconnaissance aircraft by a Polish F-16 duty pair.

On Friday, 31 July, a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft was intercepted by Polish F-16s forty kilometres north of Kołobrzeg. Today, a similar incident occurred. This time, at approximately 12:00, the interception took place 60 kilometres north-west of Łeba.

As with Friday’s incident, there was no violation of Polish airspace. The Russian aircraft was operating in international airspace without a flight plan and with its transponder switched off.

The Russian Il-20 is one of the most frequently intercepted Russian reconnaissance aircraft in recent times. We have reported on such interceptions over the Baltic Sea on the Defence24 website on numerous occasions, involving both Polish F-16s and MiG-29s. In July, Polish fighters were scrambled to intercept Russian Su-30SM2 fighters from Królewiec (Kaliningrad).
