Trump is putting tariffs on drones

According to a proclamation signed on 13 August, drones of specific sizes and capabilities, deemed particularly vital for US national security, will be subject to 100 per cent tariffs. For certain smaller machines, these tariffs will amount to 25 per cent.

15 per cent tariffs will apply to drones and parts imported from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan. 10 per cent tariffs will cover machines and components from the United Kingdom.

Some of the tariffs will come into effect in approximately three weeks. In the case of drone components not considered particularly sensitive, the tariffs will be introduced 180 days after the signing of the document.

The import restrictions are intended to become a driver for strengthening domestic production and local supply chains. As assessed by the White House, the President’s actions will “secure American drone dominance” and address the threats associated with dependence on imports of such devices.

Donald Trump continues to use tariffs as the main tool in his trade and international policy. In some cases, the imposed tariffs have encountered legal obstacles and criticism from analysts. However, the President’s decision is not a surprise. It aligns with the loudly proclaimed “America First” policy, under which Washington prioritises independence and its own interests, often at the cost of deteriorating relations with existing partners.
