Another blow to Ukrainian energy. Hungary halts gas supply
The Hungarian side has decided to suspend gas supplies to Ukraine until the resumption of crude oil transport through the Druzhba pipeline. A significant blow to Ukraine.
“We need new measures that will help us break the oil blockade and ensure Hungary’s energy security. Therefore, gas supplies from Hungary to Ukraine will be gradually suspended, and the surplus will be stored domestically. As long as Ukraine does not deliver crude oil, it will not receive gas from Hungary,” announced Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
The Druzhba pipeline was damaged as a result of a Russian attack and has been out of operation since the end of January. The Ukrainian side claims that it is under repair. Hungary accuses Ukraine of deliberately blocking deliveries and is responding with further decisions targeting the country. So far, Hungary has already halted diesel fuel supplies, blocked the 20th EU sanctions package against Russia, and vetoed an EU loan to Kyiv worth €90 billion. Budapest is also threatening to suspend electricity transmission.

Hungarian gas is an essential resource for Ukraine. According to data from the Ukrainian consulting company EXPRO, in 2025 Ukraine imported more than 2.9 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Hungary, accounting for about 45 percent of its total gas imports. Although Ukraine produces a significant portion of its own natural gas, imports from Hungary represent approximately 20–30 percent of the country’s total gas consumption.
