As the Polish Ministry of National Defence states, today the command over the US Army detachment in Poland has been transferred. Up until now, the activities within the Polish territory have been conducted by the 173rd Airborne Brigade unit. Now these soldiers have been replaced by the unit of the 1st Brigade of the 1st Cavalry division, which is a part of the NATO Response Force in 2014.
The Americans are going to be involved in training activities conducted with the Polish 7th Coastal Defence Brigade. The US Army unit which is currently stationed in Poland is equipped with M1 Abrams tanks and Bradley IFVs. In between 2014 and 2015 the elements of 1st Brigade will be replaced with a unit of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment, which is equipped with Stryker wheeled APCs.
USA decided to send elements of the 173rd Airborne Brigade to Poland due to the Russian aggression directed at Ukraine. US Army soldiers took part in the exercises that were organized in the region, including Polish Anakonda 2014 exercise or Saber Strike exercise in the Baltic states. Now these soldiers are being replaced by the units of the 1st Brigade of the 1st Cavalry Division.
