The Latvian State Border Guard has found another tunnel dug under the border with Belarus. During the inspection, 28 individuals attempting to cross the border illegally were arrested.
The passage was covered with moss and brushwood. Border services reported that the tunnel was discovered on Thursday at a distance of approximately 20 metres from the border, near Kaplava in south-eastern Latvia. This is the second instance of an underground tunnel being found used for illegal crossings of the Latvian-Belarusian border.
The first tunnel was discovered on 10 August. At that time, the local border guard detained 15 individuals in sand-stained clothing near Daugavpils. According to information provided by the services, the passage was located approximately 10 metres from the border fence.

In recent weeks, there has been intensifying migration pressure orchestrated by Belarus on the border with Latvia. On 11 August, Operation „VILKATIS” was launched, aimed at combating illegal migration. The border guard is supported by the police and the military, and a greater number of drones, helicopters, and aircraft are being used for border surveillance. To date, over 9,500 attempts at illegal crossing have been thwarted. In 2025, approximately 12,000 such cases were recorded.
