Turkey, Italy and Spain deploy jets to NATO's east
The Baltic states and Romania will receive significant support from other NATO nations as part of the transition from NATO’s Air Policing mission to the North Atlantic Alliance’s Air Defence mission.
NATO Allied Air Command (AIRCOM) announced in a statement that, under the NATO Air Defence mission, Turkey will deploy 80 personnel and five F-16 aircraft to Estonia. Meanwhile, Italy will send four Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets and one hundred of its personnel to Lithuania. The most substantial support for NATO’s eastern flank has been offered by Spain, which will deploy approximately 200 personnel, seven F-18 aircraft, and one A400M aircraft to Romania. In a later phase, the deployment of three NH-90 helicopters is also possible.
“The enhanced Air Defence mission strengthens NATO’s Integrated Air and Missile Defence by providing a more flexible, multi-layered approach to countering a broader range of threats, contributing to the protection of Allied territory on the eastern flank,” the NATO AIRCOM statement reads.
