The remains were reported to the authorities by a local resident. Police and armed forces units, including explosive ordnance disposal specialists, are working at the site. The police stated that there is no threat to the public.

The origin of the drone remains unknown. Minister of Defense Andris Spruds urged residents not to approach suspicious objects and to notify the appropriate authorities. Last week, a Ukrainian drone entered Latvian airspace from the direction of Russia and exploded in the Kraslava area. Another drone entered from Belarus and then headed toward Russia.

Drone-related incidents in the region are linked to Ukrainian drone operations targeting Russian assets in the Baltic area. Ukrainian forces have been striking infrastructure facilities, including oil ports responsible for loading Russian crude oil subject to Western sanctions. The drone attacks are carried out in swarms. Due to Russian countermeasures or other technical issues on the Ukrainian side, some drones risk veering off course. Lost drones subsequently crash on the territory of neighboring countries in the region.
