The European Commission has presented the nineteenth package of sanctions targeting the Russian Federation. These measures will cover the energy and financial sectors and will once again strike at Russia’s shadow fleet.

According to the announcement by the President of the European Commission, the Union intends to ban the import of Russian LNG (liquefied natural gas) into the European market. “It is time to turn off the tap. (…) I want to make it clear: Europeans will be safe this winter” - said Ursula von der Leyen.

Once again, EU sanctions will hit Russia’s shadow fleet. This time, they will affect 118 vessels, bringing the total number of such ships under sanctions to nearly 700. EU law will also target Russian energy companies Rosneft and Gazprom Neft, as well as several banks, including those from other countries cooperating with the Kremlin. In addition, 45 companies from Russia and third countries that export goods and technologies used by Russia on the battlefield will lose access to the European market. The sanctions will also extend to cryptocurrency platforms.
