According to the Latvian lsm.lv outlet, during the yesterday meeting of the Ministers of Defence of Poland and Latvia, Antoni Macierewicz, Minister of Defence confirmed his intention to send a company of Polish soldiers into the territory of the Baltic States. The goal of the above initiative would be to expand the collaboration with the host-countries armies, within the domain of providing regional security and bolstering the bilateral relations between the concerned states.

The Latvian outlet’s news was to be confirmed by the spokesperson for the Latvian Ministry of Defence.

During the yesterday’s meeting of the Ministers of Defence, the issues related to the upcoming NATO summit in Warsaw were discussed. According to both politicians, the event is going to be one of the most important meetings for the countries of the NATO Eastern Flank.

History of the bilateral relations between our countries shows that close collaboration increases the level of regional security. It is clear that collaboration between the Baltic states and Poland, within the military sphere, pursued throughout the recent years, turned out to be fruitful. It is also clear that there is still some potential for further development.

Moreover, the officials also discussed the ways of maintaining and increasing the level of regional security, by increasing the quantities of allied forces in the region. Ministers talked about the options within the scope of reducing the potential threat response time, especially within the context of the NATO “Spearhead” operations. The Poles announced that the listed problems will be the main and major issues which are going to be covered during the Warsaw summit.

Raimonds Bergmanis, Latvian Minister of Defence, thanked his Polish counterpart for a decision to send a company-sized element of the Polish soldiers to Latvia, as well as for the Polish Air Force’s contribution to the Baltic Air Policing operation, concerning the airspaces of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, stating that the above steps constitute a perfect example of allied solidarity.
