Polish soldiers from the 11th “Lubuska” Armored Cavalry Division will be heading for their next rotation with the Polish Military Contingent (PKW) in Latvia, now equipped with new tanks. As part of the NATO battle group, led by Canada acting as the framework nation, Poland’s Leopard 2 PL tanks are expected to be deployed.

The NATO multinational battle group (eFP NATO), currently stationed in Latvia, includes an important component from the Polish Army. Previously, Polish tank crews in Latvia operated PT-91 Twardy tanks, which are now becoming outdated. However, according to Defence24, the next rotation being prepared will involve sending more modern Leopard 2 PL main battle tanks to support the Latvian ally.

Not only is it a significant reinforcement for the Polish contingent but also for the entire battle group, which closely collaborates with the host nation’s armed forces, in this case, Latvia. Up until now, tanks like the Leopard 2 and Ariete were part of the equipment provided by Poland’s NATO allies. Specifically, Leopard 2 tanks were deployed in Latvia to support Canadian forces, while Ariete tanks were part of the Italian contingent. Soon, it may become a reality that Polish troops will serve in Latvia with their own Leopard 2 PL tanks.

A Signal of Poland’s Role in Allied Relations

By enhancing the capabilities of the NATO battle group through the deployment of new tank models in the PKW, Poland is demonstrating its commitment to the Baltic states and the Alliance as a whole. This is happening in a complex international situation shaped by the aggressive policies of the Russian Federation. Additionally, the presence of Leopard 2 PL tanks in Latvia will symbolically underscore the ongoing modernization efforts within the Polish Armed Forces. In the armoured forces, this is seen through the procurement of new MBTs, like the Leopard 2 PL, M1 Abrams, and K2. Modernizing the military allows for the deployment of new tanks on key NATO missions.

In conclusion, it has often been emphasized in Poland that the country is not only a recipient of security but also a provider of security. The PKW (where PKW stands for Polish Military Contingent) Latvia mission is a clear example of this, similar to the deployment of Polish troops in PKW Romania. Furthermore, the deployment of new tanks to PKW Latvia will offer valuable opportunities for gaining experience in allied operations, particularly at the Ādaži training ground under specific Latvian conditions. Polish tank crews, technical support, and logistics teams will gain experience from these operations, benefiting from the exchange of expertise and know-how within the battle group and with other contingents.
