A study conducted by the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) reveals that troop casualties in the Russo-Ukrainian war have surpassed two million. Russian forces sustained most of the military losses.

According to the report, since the beginning of the invasion in February 2022, Russian casualties amount to approximately 1.4 million, with roughly 450,000 of them being fatal. Ukrainian military casualties are estimated between 525,000 and 625,000, with 150,000 of them being fatal.

While these numbers may portray Ukraine in a more favourable situation, one must know that Kyiv is still losing a larger structural share of its armed forces, which are overall smaller than Russian ones. Currently, Russian forces are at an advantage numbers-wise with a three-to-one ratio. Of course, the data itself is unlikely to be entirely accurate as its collection remains flawed due to the nature of the conflict. Data collected in the report is a synthesis of American and British estimates, noting that Moscow obscures its combat losses and Kyiv is mostly silent on official troop casualties.

As the war in Ukraine proves, however, while manpower is important, it is not everything required to gain an advantage over the adversary. According to Clash Report, Russia is failing to make rapid territorial gains. It surrendered roughly 400 square kilometres across April and May, marking its first net monthly territorial deficits since August 2024. Moscow will also struggle to replace the soldiers who are not able to fight anymore. According to a CSIS assessment, the current monthly casualty rate of 30,000 to 34,000 personnel exceeds Russian intake of roughly 27,000 new recruits. To enable a constant influx of new soldiers, Moscow has mobilised felons, offered financial bounties, executed its first draft since World War II and has even deployed more than 10,000 North Korean troops to the Kursk region between 2024 and 2025.

The Ukrainian army also struggles to acquire new soldiers with more and more citizens getting mandatorily conscripted. Kyiv tries to combat the issue by expanding its deep-strike capabilities. Today, we regularly observe successful attacks in the Russian interior, including the Moscow region and the Crimean Peninsula.
