The EU wants to implement an area of military mobility. The new regulations should significantly accelerate the transport of EU forces, in the event of a potential conflict with Russia.

On 19th November the European Commission will present a document on EU military mobility. It is to concern comprehensive preparations for the rapid transport of soldiers and weapons in the event of a potential war, RMF FM reported.

Removing barriers

According to the report, EU decision-makers will want to introduce new rules removing potential barriers that block the rapid movement of troops of European Union member states. The plans would include preparing a network of land corridors and placing greater emphasis on protecting the infrastructure responsible for military transport.

„At present European bridges, roads and railway lines are not suitable for the rapid movement of tanks, soldiers and military supplies. In the case of transporting tanks from the West to the eastern flank — these tanks could get stuck in tunnels, in complicated bureaucracy, and bridges would not withstand the passage of these machines,” said MEP Dariusz Joński from the European Parliament’s defence committee, quoted by RMF.

Similar to NATO?

The EU plans are intended to closely correspond with NATO guidelines. The Alliance itself has for years also complained about a range of logistical problems that make it difficult to move heavy equipment. Another problem are legal issues that, for example, complicate decision-making during joint actions related to air defence. There is a plethora of possible legislative obstacles that could hinder NATO’s supreme commander from effectively dealing with increasingly frequent threats such as drones violating the airspace of allied countries - we have covered this matter extensively in several pieces in the past.
