Trump’s Golden Dome hits $1.2 trillion

Trump’s missile shield was supposed to be a symbol of strength. According to Defense News and the CBO estimate requested by Senator Jeff Merkley, it could cost more than $1.2 trillion over 20 years. This is no longer only a defence project, but a major fiscal and strategic problem.

The key issue is the gap between political ambition and real cost. The Trump administration had previously indicated a figure of around $175–185 billion, while the Congressional Budget Office estimates the full cost at over $1.2 trillion. This difference is not technical. It shows that the project is still politically attractive, but not clearly defined in terms of scope, architecture and financing.

The CBO based its assessment on a multi-layered system covering the continental United States, Alaska and Hawaii, with space-based assets, surface interceptors and protection against ballistic, hypersonic and cruise missiles. At the same time, the report makes clear that such a system would still not be able to stop a large-scale attack by Russia or China. This is the most important limitation.

There is also a production problem. The United States is already trying to rebuild stocks of Patriot and THAAD interceptors, while many systems and missiles have been used or deployed during current operations. Building Golden Dome would therefore compete with existing military needs, including support for allies and readiness in the Indo-Pacific.

Politically, Golden Dome fits Trump’s way of thinking: a large, visible project presented as protection of the homeland. But the numbers change the discussion. If the cost really approaches $1.2 trillion, the question is no longer whether the United States wants such a system, but whether it can finance it without weakening other defence priorities.
