Mojtaba Khamenei was seriously injured in the attack that killed his father, former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The New York Times reports that Mojtaba remains in hiding and is surrounded by doctors. Among them is said to be Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, a trained cardiac surgeon. The new leader has undergone several surgeries, is awaiting a leg prosthesis, and has difficulty speaking due to facial burns. Nevertheless, he is reportedly mentally alert and able to communicate with his advisers.

Khamenei is said to communicate with the outside world through handwritten messages delivered by couriers. The most important and current state decisions are reportedly being made by commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). In addition, the newly appointed leader is said to rely primarily on the opinions of his advisers, with decisions being made “collectively.”

The Supreme Leader is unable to exercise power over the state. Meanwhile, the influence of the IRGC’s military leadership continues to grow, as they make decisions regarding defence operations and day-to-day state affairs. It should be noted that after Ali Khamenei’s death, it was the military who supported the selection of the current leader. Consequently, according toNYT sources, Mojtaba “rarely, if ever, opposes the generals’ views.”
