The United States Department of War announced the capture of the Iranian tanker Majestic X in the Indian Ocean, outside the Strait of Hormuz. “We will continue global operations aimed at dismantling illegal networks and intercepting vessels providing material support to Iran—regardless of where they operate,” the department stated. It also released footage of the operation, showing American soldiers boarding and securing the vessel.

The Majestic X was located in the Indian Ocean, between Sri Lanka and Indonesia. In a similar area, the Americans seized another tanker, Tifani, just a few days earlier. Despite the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports, between April 13 and 21, Tehran successfully exported approximately 10.7 million barrels of crude oil. Vortexa, a maritime analytics company, recorded 35 instances of ships bypassing the American blockade in both directions.

The blockade of Iranian ports was intended to serve as one of the United States’ bargaining tools in negotiations with Iran. So far, the parties have not met for another round of talks, reportedly due to difficulties within the Iranian side in reaching a unified negotiating position.
