U.S. warship shot at
A U.S. Navy vessel was reportedly fired upon in the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian Navy allegedly hit it with two missiles as it passed near Jask Island. The Americans deny the incident.
Reuters reported the attack, citing Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency. According to Iranian state television, U.S. and Israeli warships were prevented from entering the strait. A few hours earlier, the Iranian side had warned the United States Navy against attempting to enter the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. President Donald Trump had stated that, starting Monday, American forces would assist commercial vessels in transiting the strait.
“We warn that any armed forces, especially the aggressive U.S. military, will be attacked if they attempt to approach or enter the Strait of Hormuz.” A strong response was declared against any attempts to provoke Iran. All movements of commercial ships and tankers were said to require coordination with the Iranian military.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) denied the reports, stating that “no U.S. vessel has been hit.” The Iranian side did not identify the allegedly targeted ship. A prolonged ceasefire between the warring parties remains in effect. However, incidents of this kind could lead to a resumption of hostilities.
