According toThe New York Times, US Special Forces soldiers are “advising and supporting Ecuadorian commandos during raids.” They are providing planning, intelligence, and logistical support. American troops are not directly participating in combat operations.

Ecuador is one of the main transit routes for narcotics produced in Colombia and Peru. The current President of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, has made the fight against cartels a central point of his agenda. Cooperation has been strengthened with Donald Trump, whose administration is also focused on combating the drug trade and securing national borders.

Since September, the United States has carried out 44 strikes on vessels in the Caribbean and the eastern Pacific, resulting in at least 150 deaths. Not everyone supports these operations. Some legal experts describe them as “illegal, extrajudicial killings,” arguing that civilians merely suspected of criminal activity are being targeted as military objectives.
