Luftwaffe to receive new Eurofighters

The German Air Force will acquire 20 new Eurofighter Tranche 5 fighters. The aircraft will be stationed at the Manching air base.

The jets are expected to bolster Germany’s air power between 2031 and 2034 and will replace some of the Tornado aircraft currently in service. It is worth noting that the recently signed contract is not Germany’s first Eurofighter order: under the Quadriga project Berlin previously ordered 38 of the jets.

„The order ensures continuity of production, helps preserve key skills across the supply chain and strengthens Europe’s ability to defend itself in the coming decades,” the manufacturer’s statement reads.

The deal also covers fitting the 20 new aircraft with sensors (for example, an E-Scan radar) from Airbus, which will also add electronic-warfare capabilities through integration of the Saab Arexis sensor suite. The order includes 52 engines, 12 of them spares.

Germany is the latest European country to opt for Eurofighter purchases, following Spain (25 aircraft) and Italy (24).
