Polish Prime Minister confirms talks with France on nuclear deterrence
Will Poland begin work on its own nuclear weapons? “As our capabilities grow, we will strive to prepare for the most autonomous actions possible in this regard in the future” - said Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
Before the start of the Council of Ministers meeting on Tuesday, the head of the Polish government confirmed that talks were underway with France regarding an advanced nuclear deterrence system. “We are consulting not only with France, but also with other countries that have been invited and have expressed their readiness to cooperate on this project” - he said. He added that one of the upcoming opportunities to discuss the matter would be the nuclear energy conference in Paris, scheduled to take place later in March.
“Poland takes nuclear security issues very seriously. We are investing heavily in future nuclear power plants. Poland will not want to remain passive when it comes to nuclear matters in the context of security” - said Donald Tusk.
“As our capabilities grow, we will strive to prepare for the most autonomous actions possible in this regard” - he concluded.
The French Proposal
On Monday, in Brest, France, President Emmanuel Macron presented to the public a new concept of so-called “advanced nuclear deterrence,” which is intended to involve not only Paris but also other European countries. So far eight countries have agreed to participate in the “advanced deterrence” initiative. In addition to Poland, these include the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, Sweden, and Denmark. More on this topic can be read HERE.
