Bosnia and Herzegovina is reducing its energy dependence on Russia
Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina have signed an agreement to construct a gas pipeline connecting the two countries. This move is expected to weaken Russian influence in the region.
The pipeline will link Bosnia to Croatia’s gas network and the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal on the island of Krk in the Adriatic Sea. The project will be carried out by the American company AAFS Infrastructure and Energy. According to the Balkan service of Radio Free Europe, the company’s director is Jesse Binnall, a former member of U.S. President Donald Trump’s legal team. The Americans will finance and develop the project and will be responsible for operating the pipeline in the future.
The Croatian side will build approximately 60 kilometers of the pipeline, while Bosnia will construct about 120 kilometers. The agreement still requires ratification by the parliaments of both countries. It was signed by Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and Chairwoman of the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina Borjana Krišto, in the presence of U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, during the 11th Three Seas Initiative Summit and Business Forum in Dubrovnik.
Bosnia and Herzegovina does not produce natural gas and is therefore entirely dependent on external supplies. Until now, the resource has been imported primarily from Russia, amounting to around 225 million cubic meters annually and generating approximately 75 million euros in revenue for Gazprom.
