NATO jet kinetic intercept: UAV downed over Estonia

An incident occurred in Estonian airspace involving an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that was intercepted and shot down by a NATO aircraft. The event was confirmed by Estonian Minister of Defence Hanno Pevkur, who emphasised that this was the first instance of the use of force against a drone over the country’s territory.

According to preliminary information, the drone violated Estonian airspace during an ongoing allied patrol operation in the Baltic region. Participants in the actions included the Swedish Air Force, which supported the monitoring and securing of the airspace.

Estonian authorities stated that the UAV was most likely of Ukrainian origin. Operational analyses indicate that it may have been used in actions targeting objectives located on Russian territory; however, during the mission, it lost control or was jammed, leading to its entry into NATO member states’ airspace.

Shortly before the incident, residents of Estonia and Latvia received warnings regarding a real aerial threat. Security service communications emphasised that the situation was not a drill and that, in the event of spotting a drone, individuals should immediately take shelter and notify the emergency number 112.

Estonian services are currently conducting a detailed investigation to clarify the drone’s exact flight path, its purpose, and the circumstances that led to the intrusion into the country’s airspace. NATO has announced a further strengthening of patrols in the region to mitigate the risk of similar incidents in the future.

The Ukrainian side has not yet commented on the situation.
