Hamas intends to dissolve its governing body in the Gaza Strip. In its place, a committee of Palestinian technocrats is to be established, which, according to the United States’ peace plan, will manage the territory during the postwar transition period.

This information comes from the Saudi daily “Asharq Al-Awsat,” which based its report on accounts from two sources. One of them claimed that the dissolution of the government would occur as early as Monday, July 6. The Israeli station Kan News reported that both Hamas and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have been stalling negotiations regarding the organisation’s disarmament and the implementation of U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan for the postwar Gaza Strip.

The Prime Minister’s suspension of negotiation efforts is reportedly linked to the upcoming parliamentary elections. According to the Saudi daily, Netanyahu considers any concessions regarding the Gaza Strip to be political suicide and is deliberately dragging out negotiations, which have failed to produce significant progress for months. Hamas has reportedly followed suit, waiting for a change in attitude that could come with a new government in Jerusalem. Elections in Israel must be held by the end of October this year.

The dissolution of the Hamas government does not, however, mean the dissolution and disarmament of the organisation, but only the transfer of civilian authority over the territory. Hamas is reluctant to discuss disarmament, due in part to Israel’s regular violations of the terms of the first phase of the Gaza Strip ceasefire from October 2025. Since then, the Israeli army (Israel Defense Forces) has expanded its control over Gazan territory and currently occupies approximately 60 percent of its total area. The remainder is de facto controlled by Hamas.

Donald Trump’s plan assumes that Israel will withdraw all its armed forces from the Gaza Strip after final confirmation that the terrorist groups within the territory have been disarmed. The dissolution of the government by Hamas is a good start for the normalisation of relations in the region; however, Israel’s policy toward the Gaza Strip will not change without a shift in leadership. Only after October will we know if we can count on a more stable peace.
