Denmark has received the first batch of Finnish-made Patria 6x6 wheeled armored personnel carriers. In total, Copenhagen has procured 129 of these vehicles.

In early April, Denmark joined the CAVS program, which focuses on the development and acquisition of the Finnish Patria 6x6 wheeled armored personnel carrier. The next step for Copenhagen was signing an executive agreement in July for the delivery of 129 vehicles, which will significantly strengthen the capabilities of its land forces. The ordered vehicles will be delivered in several variants: armored personnel carrier, engineering vehicle, electronic warfare vehicle, communications vehicle, and medical evacuation vehicle.

The first two units were delivered between late August and early September, when they were assigned to a unit stationed on Bornholm. There, they will be used for crew and maintenance training. Initially, the Danish Ministry of Defence stated that further deliveries would not take place until 2026.

However, just a few days later, Patria announced in a press release that deliveries are expected to continue later this year. It remains unclear whether this discrepancy was due to an error or whether the Finnish manufacturer has sufficient production capacity to accelerate the delivery schedule.

What is the Patria 6x6?

The Patria 6x6 is a Finnish three-axle armored personnel carrier designed by Patria to replace the Sisu Pasi XA-180/185/200 family of vehicles. It was developed based on the XA-200 APC, incorporating components from the heavier Patria AMV 8×8 (which also serves as the basis for Poland’s Rosomak), allowing for technical standardization as well as reduced production and operating costs. The vehicle is crewed by two soldiers and can carry up to eight dismounts. Its armor provides protection levels ranging from 2 to 4 according to STANAG 4569A standards (depending on the armor package installed). The powerplant is a Scania DC09 074A diesel engine producing 294 kW (400 hp), enabling the 24-ton vehicle to reach a maximum speed of 100 km/h.

The APC can be fitted with a remote weapon station or a manned turret system armed with a heavy machine gun, automatic grenade launcher, or automatic cannon. The Patria 6x6 can also serve as a platform for numerous specialized variants, such as a command vehicle, self-propelled mortar, electronic warfare vehicle, or self-propelled air defense system. Currently, these vehicles are in service with the armed forces of Finland, Latvia, and Sweden. In the future, they will also enter service with the armed forces of Germany and Ukraine.
