The British will lead a European initiative aimed at increasing funding for long-range precision strike capabilities.

During the concluding NATO summit in Ankara, the outgoing British Prime Minister Keir Starmer was to chair a meeting presenting details of the initiative, whose primary task is to increase European long-range strike capabilities. According to data from the British Ministry of Defence , European NATO members will allocate up to $50 billion over the next ten years for the development of these capabilities. Through them, Alliance countries are to be capable of precisely striking targets located from 300 to even 2,000 kilometers away. As reported, the aforementioned initiative is to be at the center of the NATO defense agenda in 2027.

European long-range strike capabilities are rising

„The new initiative will enable European allies to share experiences and technological progress, as well as deepen industrial cooperation for the rapid development of NATO’s potential,” reads the website of the British MoD, which reported that the United Kingdom intends to allocate £3 billion by 2030 for deep precision strike capabilities under the Defence Investment Plan.

In addition to the new project, the British are involved in other initiatives aimed at increasing long-range strike capabilities. The British MoD website mentioned the British-German „Deep Precision Strike” established under the Trinity House Agreement. The project’s goal is joint work on stealth weapons and hypersonic weapons with a range of two thousand kilometers. In this case, the UK is to spend £770 million. Another initiative involving the British is the „Stratus” trilateral agreement. Great Britain, France, and Italy have committed to joint work on a new, improved version of the Storm Shadow missiles. In this instance, the British declared a spend of £1.4 billion over the next four years. The last of the mentioned projects is the „Precision Strike Missile” (PrSM), co-developed with the USA and Australia. Here, the main goal is to acquire supersonic ballistic missiles capable of hitting targets up to five hundred kilometers away.

Ministers' Statements

Individual ministers of the British government commented on the new initiatives. Defence Minister Dan Jarvis said: „Our new suite of deep precision strike weapons will give our forces the ability to strike targets hundreds of kilometers away with great accuracy—strengthening NATO and deterring our adversaries.” He spoke about defense investments, which are expected to reach nearly £300 billion over the next four years. Jarvis also cited interesting data regarding Russia and the threat it poses to the collective security system. According to data provided by the British defense chief, in the last two years, NATO was forced to scramble its fighter jets 700 times. This was all due to Russian aircraft approaching the airspace of North Atlantic Treaty Organization member states. Meanwhile, Russian activity specifically around UK waters reportedly increased by 30 percent.

„In Ankara, we are sending a clear message to President Putin: NATO is stronger, more European, and ready to defend our citizens against the long-term threat from himself and the Russian state,” said the United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper.
