US: „Germany is the defence leader in Europe”
The Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence for War Policy at the Pentagon, Elbridge Colby, is continuing his mission to review the presence of American troops in Europe. In recent days, the politician has held a series of meetings with representatives of several European allies.
The architect of the US National Defence Strategy and National Security Strategy, Elbridge Colby, announced on social media that discussions had been held regarding the ongoing review of American forces on the Old Continent. According to the US Deputy Assistant Secretary, the final outcome of this process will not rely solely on analyses conducted by Pentagon personnel, but consultations with selected NATO allies are also expected to play a significant role.
Germany as the Main Force?
Information provided by Colby indicates that he has met with representatives of several European nations in recent days. The American also held a meeting with officials representing NATO Headquarters.
Which countries specifically are involved? They are Germany, the United Kingdom, Romania, and Italy. In the first instance, Colby spoke with the German Chief of Defence and the local Political Director. The primary topic was the new German military strategy. “This plan, combined with Germany’s commitment to rapidly meeting the 5 per cent Hague obligation, will dramatically accelerate NATO 3.0 and strengthen the Alliance’s ability to achieve deterrence by denial (deterrence intended to stop a given enemy action by making it unfeasible – editor’s note),” Colby wrote, identifying Germany as the “leader of European conventional defence”.

Following this meeting, Colby met a day later with the British Ambassador to the USA, Christian Turner. In this case, the talks were reportedly focused primarily on the issue of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. The Pentagon representative also emphasised the importance of London increasing its defence spending, describing the UK as a “close American ally” that is crucial to the security of the United States.
