Another round of US-Iran negotiations
On February 26, another round of talks between the United States and Iran took place. The negotiations were held at the Embassy of Oman in Geneva.
The Iranian delegation was led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The US side was represented by President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and the president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. According to Reuters, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, was also expected to join the negotiations. The Iranian side described today’s round of talks as “constructive.” Both sides have been exchanging “creative and positive ideas.”
A day earlier, the Iranian delegation reportedly presented the Americans with proposals concerning its nuclear program, which were intended to bring both sides closer to an agreement. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Bagei assured that the discussions would focus solely on Iran’s nuclear program and the lifting of US sanctions. The American side had previously attempted to exert pressure on Iran regarding, among other things, its support and financing of various Islamist militias operating in the Middle East.
Israel and the United States accuse Iran of developing its nuclear program for offensive purposes, aiming to gain access to nuclear weapons. In June 2025, Iranian nuclear facilities were bombed by Israeli and American forces. In recent weeks, there has been a noticeable buildup of US military forces in the Middle East region. Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened Iran with military action should the negotiations fail to produce an agreement. The Iranian side is aware of the United States’ military capabilities and is seeking to resolve the issue through diplomatic means.
