Nordics see the Chinese threat
Norway has arrested another Chinese citizen on suspicion of illegal intelligence activity in the north of the country, only days after a separate case involving alleged access to satellite data.
As reported by The Straits Times, this shows that Beijing’s intelligence activity is increasingly visible in the Nordic region, especially around space, the Arctic, data and critical infrastructure.
The key issue is that the Nordic states no longer look at China only through trade and investment. Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark increasingly treat Chinese activity as a security challenge, especially when it concerns satellites, ports, research, telecommunications, energy infrastructure and the High North. This is a different perspective from many countries in Central and Eastern Europe, where Russia remains the dominant threat perception.
For Poland and the region, this creates a strategic problem. We understand Russia very well, because the threat is direct, military and historical. But Chinese operations are often quieter, more technical and less visible. They concern data, companies, universities, technology and infrastructure. The Nordic countries see this more clearly, and Central and Eastern Europe should draw conclusions from their experience.
