Greece modernises defence with female volunteers
The Greek army has begun accepting women for voluntary military service. It is a new initiative that is supposed to expand opportunities for women in the military.
As of now, a total of 72 recruits have arrived at a training centre in Lamia, located in central Greece. The program is aimed at young women aged 20 to 26. Before enrolling, new recruits need to meet the required military fitness standards and have no felony convictions. The service lasts for 12 months with the same duration, obligations and conditions that would apply to male conscripts.
Traditionally, military service in Greece was compulsory for men only; women were not obligated to participate. Now they have been given the opportunity to not only contribute to national defence but also gain valuable training, experience and qualifications that could support their future careers.
Volunteers will gain access to military hospital services and receive additional points in certain public-sector hiring procedures. The period of service will also be recognised as professional experience. After the service, participants will have a chance to decide whether they want to become professional soldiers or work as civilian employees of the armed forces.
