Polish MoD Reveals Details of K2PL MBT Contract

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak‑Kamysz has disclosed the details of the contract for K2 and K2PL tanks and their accompanying support vehicles. The agreement negotiated with the Korean side is valued at USD 6.7 billion, approximately PLN 24 billion at the current exchange rate.
The Minister stated that the Ministry is ready to sign the executive contract „but, out of respect for our Korean partners, where the process of appointing the new head of their Ministry of Defence is under way, we want to do so in his presence.” In practice, this means the contract can be signed after 21st July.
The deal covers 180 tanks, including over 60 in a „Polonized” variant, only three or four of which will be built in Korea, with the rest produced in Poland at the Bumar-Łabędy plant in Gliwice. It also includes a technology transfer, support and warranty elements, „the entire technical back‑end,” and more than 80 support vehicles for the K2 tanks.
„The price is much lower than it would have been if we had signed the contract two to three months ago. I thank the Armament Agency for conducting the negotiations and for their major contribution,” said Minister Kosiniak‑Kamysz. He also expressed his gratitude to Deputy Minister Paweł Bejda, who is responsible for the modernization effort. Deputy Minister Bejda added that the first 30 tanks under the new agreement are to be delivered as early as 2026. „We want the K2PL to become an export success story for Łabędy,” he said.

Deputy Minister Bejda also confirmed that the execution of the first executive contract will conclude as planned this year, with a total of 180 tanks delivered.
Meanwhile, Mr. Lee Yong-bae, President of Hyundai Rotem said: „Thanks to the EC No. 2, we will contribute to the development of the Polish K2PL tank and its production by Zakłady Mechaniczne »BUMAR-Łabędy« S.A., strengthening Poland’s defense potential and domestic industry. Hyundai Rotem commits to a thorough transfer of technology and localization of production in Poland, based on the technical knowledge and experience we have accumulated in Korea over decades.”
Mr Lee Yong-bae added, „Under the new agreement, Hyundai Rotem promises to ensure maximum efficiency, uncompromising quality, and on-time deliveries: just as we contributed to enhancing Poland’s security through the successful and timely execution of Implementing Agreement No. 1. We also pledge to achieve real and lasting results through genuine technology transfer and Polonization. To that end, we will work closely with Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa and ZM »BUMAR-Łabędy.« Drawing on the shared values of Korea and Poland, Hyundai Rotem will spare no effort to bolster the Polish defense industry and security, and ultimately help make Poland a hub of the European defence market.”
