Nordic security: NATO strategy faces internal resistance
A meeting of NATO foreign ministers is taking place today in Helsingborg, southern Sweden. Simultaneously, a group of individuals organised a protest against the Alliance. Who opposes NATO in Sweden?

The protest consists of several dozen participants. They are dressed in black and have their faces masked. They carry banners reading “Shut down NATO.” Other banners feature anarchist symbols and slogans expressing opposition to the policies of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. According to local sources, Friday’s demonstration was not previously announced.
Sociologist Prof. Magnus Wennerhag from Södertörn University near Stockholm offers reassurances. He stated that the group consists primarily of autonomous far-left movements and that this is more of a campaign than a formal movement or organisation.
Last week, a legal march of several hundred people took place in Helsingborg, demanding Sweden’s withdrawal from NATO. Similar to today, the organisers were left-wing movements. It is worth noting that in the Swedish Parliament, the Left Party Vänsterpartiet) and the Green Party Miljöpartiet de gröna) were the only ones that did not support the country’s accession to the Alliance.
Participants of today’s march were not allowed to approach the hotel housing the representatives of the member states. The area around the hotel has been cordoned off and is under police protection. It can be clearly stated that the Swedish left opposes Sweden’s membership in NATO. At present, there is no evidence of interference by a third state, such as Russia. Sweden is the newest member of NATO, having joined the Alliance on March 7, 2024. The primary reason for accession was the aggressive policy of the Russian Federation, most evident in the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war.
