Israel will create a „security zone” in southern Lebanon
The operation would involve controlling all bridges over the Litani River in Lebanon, as well as the areas to its south. Tel Aviv continues its fighting against Hezbollah.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz stated that “the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) will continue to operate in Lebanon with full force against Hezbollah. Hundreds of thousands of residents of southern Lebanon who evacuated to the north will not return south of the Litani River until the safety of northern Israel’s residents is guaranteed.”
The IDF has destroyed all bridges over the Litani that were used by Hezbollah. The army will control the remaining bridges and the security zone. “The principle is clear: where there is terror and rockets, there will be no homes or residents, and the IDF will be there,” the minister added.
Israel is attempting to establish a buffer zone and force Hezbollah to fight on Lebanese territory. In an interview with Reuters, Hezbollah member of the Lebanese parliament Hasan Fadlallah said that the organisation would “fight to prevent the creation of a buffer zone.” Such a zone would pose an “existential threat” to Lebanon.
Hezbollah and Iran support each other. Iran funds and trains the organisation’s fighters, while those fighters assist in conducting military operations against Tehran’s enemies in the region. The Lebanese government has prohibited Hezbollah from carrying out military activities. However, the official authorities are too weak to enforce the law, allowing the organisation to continue its operations virtually unhindered.
