No consent for the use of force in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran warns the UN

The United Nations Security Council had planned a vote on the use of force to open the Strait of Hormuz. The permanent members oppose this initiative, while Iran has warned against taking any such action.

For now the vote has been postponed indefinitely. In response to these reports, Iran’s Foreign Minister issued a statement. “Mr. Araghchi emphasizes that any provocative actions by aggressors and their supporters, including within the UN Security Council, regarding the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, will only further complicate matters.”

The draft resolution authorising the use of armed force to unblock the Strait was submitted by Bahrain. The measure would allow the use of “defensive” forces to protect navigation in the Strait of Hormuz from Iranian attacks. “We cannot tolerate economic terrorism that affects our region and the world. The entire world is feeling the consequences of these events,” said Bahrain’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Jamal al-Ruwai.

The text of the resolution has received support from the United States. However, France, China, and Russia oppose the use of force. All of these countries are permanent members of the UN Security Council and hold veto power. At present, it is expected that they will exercise this right should the vote take place. According to sources cited by the Associated Press, the vote will most likely occur on Saturday.
