Rubio: US-Iran agreement possible despite new strikes

The United States has carried out strikes in southern Iran. The operation was reportedly conducted in „self-defence,” targeting Iranian rocket launchers and vessels allegedly involved in mine-laying operations. However, this does not mean the end of the ceasefire, according to the American side.

„U.S. forces conducted self-defence strikes in southern Iran today to protect our troops from threats posed by Iranian forces,” announced U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) spokesperson Capt. Tim Hawkins on Monday, May 25.

A senior U.S. official told Fox News that two Iranian boats were caught laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz; both were destroyed in the attack. A surface-to-air missile launcher in the city of Bandar Abbas, which had been targeting American aircraft, was also hit. The Americans maintain that these were defensive strikes.

The strikes have concluded, and it has been emphasised that they do not signal the end of the ceasefire. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio assured that an agreement with Iran remains possible despite the strikes. „There were some talks in Qatar today, so we will see if we can make progress. I think the discussions are focused primarily on the precise wording of the final agreement, so it will take a few more days,” Rubio said.

As of now, the agreement between the U.S. and Iran is expected to include, among other things, a 60-day extension of the ceasefire, Tehran opening the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping, the continuation of talks regarding the Iranian nuclear program, and the U.S. easing the blockade of Iranian ports and certain sanctions.
