Astri Polska has begun its involvement in the THEOS-2 programme, the purpose of which is to build EO satellites for the Thai government. Solutions developed in Warsaw will play a key role in operation of the onboard computer of one of two satellites of the constellation. The mission launch has been planned for 2020.
THEOS-2 initiative assumes that two EO satellites will be constructed and launched into the outer space, for the Thai government. One that would provide Thailand with high-res. imagery and one smaller platform. The high-res. satellite would be delivered by Airbus Defence and Space, while the smaller platform is to be supplied by Surrey Satellite Technology, Airbus Defence and Space’s daughter company. Then it is going to be integrated and tested in Thailand, by the engineers working domestically, within the framework of a know-how transfer.
Astri Polska is to deliver and integrate the test environment that is to be used to validate the software of the high-res satellite’s onboard computer.
We are happy that we are able to co-create another important space programme. Up until now we’ve been involved mainly in European projects. This time, however, for the first time in the history of ours, a country outside Europe is going to be the end-user of our solutions: here, I am referring to Thailand. Digital test environments are a well-known matter for us. At the moment we are working on solutions as such dedicated, for instance, for the JUICE mission, the goal of which would be to examine the Jupiter and its icy moons.
High-res satellite will make it possible to take photos with a resolution of 50 cm. It is to be based on a proven Astrobus-S design. The platform is going to be tailored to the individual mission requirements. THEOS-2 constellation is to ultimately replace the THEOS 1-gen. EO satellite manufactured by Airbus DS and placed in the outer space back in 2008. The THEOS mission was to come to an end in 2014, but the satellite is still operational and it is transferring the gathered data back to Earth.
