Chinese spies in Germany
Germany’s Federal Prosecutor’s Office has announced the arrest of a married couple suspected of spying for China. The couple was charged with establishing contacts with scientists to obtain intelligence for China regarding technologies with potential military applications.
In accordance with German privacy laws, the pair was identified as Xuejun C. and Hua S. These individuals are suspected of working for Chinese intelligence. They were accused of illegally establishing contacts with scientists from German universities and research institutions, including professors specializing in aerospace engineering, computer science, and artificial intelligence. The couple allegedly posed as translators or employees in the automotive industry.
The alleged spies completed at least part of their assignment, as they succeeded in persuading some scientists to travel to China and deliver paid lectures there. Representatives of Chinese state-owned defense companies reportedly attended these events.
