The Finnish Defence Forces have established temporary airspace and maritime restrictions in the eastern Gulf of Finland, close to the Russian border. The restrictions were introduced on 16 October 2026, at 05:42 for aviation and 05:56 for maritime traffic. Similar measures have previously been implemented in response to drone activity near Finnish territory.
The Finnish Defence Forces announced temporary restrictions on aviation and maritime traffic in the eastern Gulf of Finland, an area of strategic importance due to its proximity to Russia and the approaches to St Petersburg. Information on the affected areas and applicable restrictions is available through Finland’s national traffic management operator, Fintraffic.
The Finnish authorities have not yet confirmed whether the latest measures were prompted by unidentified drones, Russian military activity or another security incident. The establishment of restricted areas does not necessarily indicate that Finnish airspace has been violated. Finland has introduced similar restrictions on several occasions in recent months. In July 2026, temporary restrictions in the Gulf of Finland were associated with Ukrainian drone strikes against targets inside Russia, including facilities in the Leningrad region. Finnish military authorities explained that the measures were precautionary and intended to protect civilians while allowing the armed forces to respond to potential aerial threats.
Another incident occurred on 14 August, when Finland again restricted air and maritime traffic in the eastern Gulf of Finland. On the same day, a NATO fighter aircraft shot down an unidentified drone that had entered Latvian airspace, highlighting the growing challenges associated with unmanned aerial systems operating near NATO territory. The latest restrictions underline the increasing security challenges in the Baltic Sea region, particularly as drone operations against Russian military and strategic infrastructure continue. Unmanned aircraft operating near national borders can create risks for neighbouring countries, even when those countries are not the intended targets.
