European arms corporations with aid for Ukraine
The German company Rheinmetall, together with the European firm Destinus, has decided to establish a joint venture that will expand the production of cruise missiles and rocket systems. Part of this production will be designated for Ukraine. The German corporation Quantum Systems has also announced the start of production of multi-purpose unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for Kyiv.
The creation of the joint venture is planned for the second half of 2026. The joint production will include, among others, Ruta cruise missiles, which are being used by Ukraine on the front lines. Destinus, headquartered in the Netherlands, specialises in the development and manufacturing of cruise missile systems and turbojet engines. As part of a European serial production program, the company produces more than 2,000 cruise missile systems annually.
Drone manufacturer Quantum Systems is also expanding its cooperation with Ukraine. Similarly, it has established a joint venture under the “Build with Ukraine” initiative. Production of 10,000 multi-purpose quadcopter drones for the Ukrainian Armed Forces has begun in Germany.
Berlin remains one of Kyiv’s most important allies in its defensive war against Russia. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion in February 2022, Germany has provided Ukraine with at least €39 billion in civilian aid and an even larger amount in military support, estimated at around €55 billion. The German budget for 2026 allocates an additional €11.5 billion in assistance for Kyiv.
Beyond aid to Ukraine, the decisions of European defence companies will also strengthen domestic production capabilities at a time when this is particularly crucial for the region. Given the uncertainty surrounding the foreign policy of the US administration under Donald Trump, Europe should take steps toward achieving military self-sufficiency.
