New UK Prime Minister. Andy Burnham takes office

Keir Starmer has officially resigned as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He has pledged his full support to his successor, Andy Burnham. The new Prime Minister has already departed Buckingham Palace following an audience with the King and is travelling to Downing Street.
On Monday, 20 July, Andy Burnham became the 59th Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He is the seventh Labour Prime Minister in British history and the seventh Prime Minister of the United Kingdom since the Brexit referendum in 2016. In the upcoming days, the new Prime Minister will appoint ministers for a new government.
Between 2001 and 2017, Burnham served as the Member of Parliament for Leigh in northern England; in Gordon Brown’s government, he held positions including Secretary of State for Culture and Secretary of State for Health. He built his reputation serving as the Mayor of Greater Manchester from 2017 to 2026.
Former Prime Minister Keir Starmer took office on 5 July 2024, becoming the first politician from the left to do so since 2010. He resigned due to poor polling figures and pressure from within the Labour Party.
During Andy Burnham’s first speech in Downing Street, one could hear a bitter tone coming from the Prime Minister. “Britain needs to show the world that we can regain our stability once again. And that’s our challenge, to make politics work.” He claimed that the previous governments were “not good enough” and announced that his policies will be the beginning of “the biggest changes in the last 40 years, a new political model and a new economic model.” Burnham also stated that later this year, he will bring forward a “10-year plan” which will outline his vision for the future of the United Kingdom.
