Ukraine answers Shaheds with autonomous interceptors
Ukraine is deploying autonomous interceptor drones. They are designed to automate 95 percent of the process of shooting down Russian Shaheds, from the drone’s takeoff to target destruction.
“Ukrainian drones are already shooting down autonomous Shaheds – we are scaling up the use of next-generation interceptor drones. We continue to systematically strengthen airspace protection. One of the participants in the Brave1 programme has created technology that automates 95 percent of the entire target interception process – from the drone’s takeoff to the destruction of the Shahed,” reads a Telegram post by Ukrainian Minister of Defence Mykhailo Fedorov.
The Minister confirmed that the technology has already been tested in combat conditions. The drone operator observes the movement of potential targets in real time, selects one of them, and then issues the command for its destruction. The rest of the process is automatic: the system independently directs the drone toward the target, autonomously recognises it, and homes in on the Shahed.
“Autonomy is one of the key directions in the development of modern air defence. Such technologies enable a faster response to mass attacks and more effective protection of Ukrainian cities. We are increasing the scale of implementing solutions that have already proven their effectiveness in combat conditions,” the minister added.
Iranian Shahed drones are widely used by the Russian Federation to carry out attacks on Ukrainian targets. They are cheaper than missiles and can be launched in large numbers, overwhelming Ukrainian air defences.
