The Lithuanian Ministry of Defense has announced that, as part of the ongoing modernization of its armed forces, it has decided to purchase the Polish-made GROM MANPADS.

„Lithuania remains firmly committed to modernising its armed forces, with a strong focus on air defence. Our military stockpiles have been reinforced with GROM missiles under a €28M contract signed with Poland’s MESKO S.A.”, Lithuanian MoD stated via X.

GROM is a Polish‑made man‑portable air‑defense missile system (MANPADS) designed to engage low‑flying aerial targets such as aircraft, helicopters, or drones. It consists of a single‑stage, 72 mm‑diameter solid‑fuel rocket motor and an infrared homing seeker. The missile reaches speeds up to 650 m/s, has an effective range of up to 5.5 km and a ceiling of 3.5 km, and carries a 1.35 kg warhead.

Lithuania has procured the GROM system from Poland on two prior occasions. In 2014, it signed a contract worth approximately €34.4 million for its delivery, and in 2023 it concluded another deal valued at over €20 million.   An evolution of the GROM is the more advanced PIORUN system, currently in service with Latvia and Ukraine—where it has successfully engaged various aerial targets in combat—as well as in Estonia and Norway.
