The former Secretary addressed a resignation letter to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. “You have been unable, and the Treasury has been unwilling, to commit the resources that the nation needs to defend the country at this time of rising threats,” the letter reads. For months, the government in London has struggled to secure defence funding. Work is ongoing on a comprehensive Defence Investment Plan (DIP). It was originally scheduled for publication last fall; subsequently, the government unofficially indicated that publication would take place this week.
At this point, it can be concluded that the plan will not see the light of day in the near future. As stated in the former minister’s letter, “I would not be able to accept the DIP settlement that does not give our Forces the resources they need, I am now left with no other option thatn to submit my resignation as your Defence Secretary”

The parliamentary Public Accounts Committee warned that the delay in publishing the DIP has resulted in a wasted opportunity to modernise the military, undermined the United Kingdom’s credibility in the eyes of its allies, and weakened its ability to deter adversaries.
The Secretary’s resignation is a significant blow to the Labour government in London. The current ruling party is performing increasingly poorly in the polls, and the incumbent Prime Minister is experiencing a rebellion within his own party, where some MPs are demanding his resignation.
