European Commission approves Poland’s €43.7B SAFE Plan
The European Commission approved Poland’s national plan for spending money on defence from the SAFE program. Poland applied for funding for 139 projects worth EUR 43.7 billion. The EC also gave the green light to seven other EU countries.
In addition to Poland, on Monday the Commission also approved plans submitted by Estonia, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, and Finland. The SAFE program provides a total of €150 billion in support in the form of low-interest loans for the purchase of military equipment, largely manufactured in Europe. Poland is set to be its biggest beneficiary.
The SAFE Regulation was adopted on May 27, 2025, as part of the “Ready for 2030” package, a defense package providing EU member states with financial leverage to stimulate a surge in investment in defense capabilities. SAFE will enable Member States to immediately and massively increase their defense investments through joint procurement from the European defense industry, focusing on priority capabilities.
