Israel threatens Lebanon
If Hezbollah joins a potential armed conflict between the United States and Iran, the Israeli military will respond with an attack on Lebanon?
The Israeli side has threatened heavy strikes on Lebanese civilian infrastructure, Reuters reported on February 24. The warning comes amid rising tensions in the Middle East. Pressure is being exerted by the United States, which has threatened Iran with military action if it refuses to make concessions on nuclear issues. The US is amassing forces around Iran—the largest buildup since the Iraq War in 2003.
The Lebanese Hezbollah is an ally of Iran. However, it was significantly weakened during the 2024 war with Israel (which Israel fought concurrently with its operations in the Gaza Strip). Currently, according to Middle Eastern media, Hezbollah is rebuilding its capabilities, arming itself for an upcoming war, and preparing to strike Israel. The Saudi broadcaster Al Arabiya reported that actual command over Hezbollah has been taken over by officers of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Following the 2024 war, a peace agreement was concluded. Under its terms, Lebanon committed to disarming Hezbollah in the southern part of the country, where the militants had established a quasi-state along the border with Israel. Due to Lebanon’s failure to comply with the agreement, regular strikes have been carried out against the country, which have intensified in recent days.
Amid these tensions, Iran has conducted another round of military exercises by the IRGC. The drills are taking place over the Persian Gulf, along the country’s southern coast, and involve missile systems, artillery, drones, and armored vehicles. The next round of US–Iran talks is scheduled for Thursday, February 26.
