As Defence24 has unofficially learned, Serhii Koretskyi, Director General of Ukraine’s Naftogaz, will become the new Prime Minister of Ukraine. His candidacy is expected to be officially presented soon to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, which, in accordance with the constitution, makes the final decision on the appointment of the head of government.
Koretskyi is a manager with many years of experience in the energy sector and one of the key figures in the Ukrainian economy during the period of full-scale Russian aggression. As head of Naftogaz, he was responsible for the operations of one of Ukraine’s most important strategic companies, tasked with ensuring the state’s energy security. Under his leadership, Naftogaz developed activities related to diversifying gas supplies, increasing the resilience of the energy system, and strengthening cooperation with foreign partners. The experience gained in managing the energy sector is expected to be of particular importance both during the war and in the planned reconstruction of Ukraine.
Koretskyi also has extensive international contacts and maintains good relations with European economic partners and institutions involved in supporting Ukraine. Particularly important are his relations with Poland, built in part through Naftogaz’s cooperation with Orlen.
Cooperation between Orlen and Naftogaz
Recently, Naftogaz and Orlen signed two cooperation agreements that set the framework for further joint actions by both companies in areas key to Ukraine’s energy security and the transformation of the energy sector. The first agreement concerns cooperation in the LNG field. It includes an analysis of possibilities to increase trade in liquefied natural gas between Orlen and Naftogaz, as well as the use of regasification and transport infrastructure in the Baltic Sea region and Central and Eastern Europe. The cooperation is intended to enable the development of logistical and commercial solutions that will increase the flexibility of gas supplies to Ukraine and strengthen the energy security of the entire region.
The second memorandum covers the exchange of experience in energy transition, emission reduction, energy efficiency, sustainable development, and ESG standards. It also envisages cooperation between experts from both companies and the exchange of knowledge on preparing the energy sector for future challenges.
„In the face of the ongoing war, reliable, flexible, and diversified gas supplies remain key to Ukraine’s energy security. The signed agreement is a continuation of our cooperation with Orlen and creates a framework for further actions aimed at strengthening the resilience of the Ukrainian energy system,” said Serhii Koretskyi, Director General of Naftogaz.
Why Is This a Good Choice?
The appointment of Serhii Koretskyi as Prime Minister of Ukraine would be a choice based on experience, managerial competencies, and knowledge of the most important challenges facing the state. During the war, Ukraine needs not only effective political leadership but also individuals capable of efficiently managing strategic sectors of the economy. By heading Naftogaz during one of the most difficult periods in the country’s history, Koretskyi has proven that he can make decisions under pressure and uncertainty.
His experience in the energy sector may prove particularly valuable both during Ukraine’s continued defense and in the post-war reconstruction process. Energy security remains one of the foundations of state independence, and a person with practical knowledge of how this sector operates can more effectively coordinate government actions in the areas of economy, infrastructure, and international cooperation. Koretskyi combines business competencies with experience in building the resilience of state institutions to Russian pressure.
An important advantage of this candidacy is also his foreign relations, particularly with European partners, including Poland. Naftogaz’s cooperation with Orlen shows that Koretskyi is capable of developing projects that strengthen not only the Ukrainian economy but also the security of the entire region. His nomination could therefore mean greater use of the potential for cooperation with allies, combining managerial experience with the needs of Ukrainian state policy.
