The German frigate Sachsen has assumed command of a standing NATO task group. It will be joined by the frigate Brandenburg. The dpa news agency suggests that Germany’s increased presence is linked to Russian military activity in the region.

Issues related to the change of command in the North Atlantic were discussed between German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and his British counterpart, John Healey.

The destroyer HMS Dragon was dispatched to the eastern Mediterranean following a drone attack on the British Akrotiri Air Base in Cyprus and has already arrived at its destination. The drone strike was a consequence of a US and Israeli attack on Iran. The United Kingdom, France, and Greece have all increased their military presence in the region.

The Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1) is a multinational NATO naval task force. It operates in the North Atlantic, the North Sea, and the Baltic Sea, among other areas. Its mission is to maintain NATO’s continuous maritime presence and to protect strategic sea lanes and critical infrastructure.
